Artopia 2007 – 21 September to 14 October
23 days, 250 events, 2500 artists
Surprising encounters, hidden treasures, exploration – it's Artopia! During Artopia visual artists, craftsmen and their presenters offer an invitation to experience the highly personal passions, skills and challenges of their working world. All events are FREE with very few exceptions.
Artopia is a biennial festival program with a focus on celebrating the talents of local artists in Western Australia .
Visitors can follow a trail of stepping into different studios, seeing artists’ working in situ, plus the bonus of taking part in Big Drawing sessions around the State, as well as discovering the rich array of West Australian galleries.
In 2005, 2000 artists at 200 venues welcomed over 200,000 people into their working worlds.
Artists display sculpture, glass-making, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, painting, printmaking, new media, animation, mosaic and photography plus a whole lot more. Galleries also present special programs to showcase their artists, host talks and offer advice on looking at and buying art.
“Artopia provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy artworks that reflect the cultural identity of our vast State.” Sheila McHale MLA, Minister for Culture and the Arts.
“The originality of artists is very inspiring and uplifting. It takes one out of everyday life into the world of imagination, and the discovery of a talented universe.” Visitor, Artopia 05
“Artopia is a wonderful initiative!” Ian de Souza, artist
“We had a fabulous Artopia – it was a great way of spreading the word! We simply showed people what we do as professional makers and hoped to spread the love we all feel for making.” Fleur Schell, ceramicist, SODA Studio
